Ask Our Men in Black: Q & A About Our Men In Black Diocese of New Ulm Prayer For Vocations Our MIB Home
If you are ordained a priest, but then decide it's not for you ... can you leave?

Yes. Once in a while this happens and when it does the priest leaves the ministry on a "leave of absence." This is a time for reflection to see what he really wants to do. If he decides that yes, he wants to leave active ministry, he may.

Some priests decide to formally leave ministry and the promises they made on the day of their ordination. This is called "laicization." In this process the priest does not technically lose his sacramental abilities, but is asked not to present himself as a priest, meaning he is not to celebrate mass or the other sacraments. He is free from the priestly duties like prayer. He is also free of his vow of celibacy, meaning he may get married, even in the Church.
