Ask Our Men in Black: Q & A About Our Men In Black Diocese of New Ulm Prayer For Vocations Our MIB Home
What exactly does it take to be a priest?

The first thing needed is to have a love of Christ. Without love of Him, we will be ineffective. We also need the zeal to serve. When God calls us to anything, He will also give us the gifts and talents needed. We need to recognize those gifts in ourselves and say 'yes' to the call.

We need to discern our calling and determine if God is calling us to the priesthood. Discernment is a difficult process of prayer and conversation (perhaps with a spiritual director or a priest). After a period of discernment, you apply to a diocese or order, and let them help you continue your discernment to the diocese or order. If you are accepted, you will moving into a period of formation. In formation, we enter a seminary and live and meet with others to help us understand our calling (these people are priests, faculty, and other seminarians).

To be a good priest, it takes prayer, trust, and love for all of our brothers and sisters.

Being a priest is one of the greatest things in the world! No two days are ever the same and the different opportunites we encounter are fantastic.
