Ask Our Men in Black: Q & A About Our Men In Black Diocese of New Ulm Prayer For Vocations Our MIB Home
Can one be too old to think about the priesthood?

Not really, though due to the length of study, those who are later in life may not be considered for the Diocesan Priesthood. There are many men who are entering the seminary in their 30's, 40's, and even their 50's. Some Dioceses and orders have age limits, some do not. Each case is examined on a case-by-case basis. How much education does the candidate have, especially in philosophy? How is the candidate's general health? Does he have the ability to adapt to a new way of life, especially in seminary formation? Part of the reason behind the age limits is that it is expensive to go to seminary, and if the candidate were older, the it is less cost-effective for just a few years of ministry. For example, just for Seminary, a diocese could pay easily $100,000. If the candidate were only to be active 5 years of priestly ministry, that works out to be $20,000 a year. Most dioceses have limited funds.

There is a great gift that older candidates bring. Their life experiences can help in giving a wider perspective of the Church and our Faith. Older candidates will find their years make them more in tune with others.

Long story short: It's never too late to serve God and the Church.
